Font (times new roman, arial, or cambri) Double spaced At least two pages Works cited page Use APA format - - Not too different from MLA uideline Choose a single species of interest, and write a report that covers the following information (not necessarily in this order): -Distribution and habitat - Life cycle and reproduction - Feeding strategies -Unique characteristics Conservation status (endangered, threatened, etc.) The causes for this Problems/benefit to society Ecological significance Any other interesting information/topics you can think of - - - The assignment will be worth 10 extra credit points. In order to receive all of the points, you must answer ALL of the aforementioned topics, so make sure to pick an animal that is easily researched IMPORTANT Make sure to ONLY use sources that are peer reviewed. Explanation / Answer

Selected Species: Giant Panda Bear (Ailuropoda melanoleuca)

Distribution and habitat:

Giant bear panda found in lowlands of Yangtze River Basin and Yellow river. Because of human population and their threats to Panda, they prefer to live in the mountains. Remote population of Panda has been seen in mountains of Central and Western China. These mountains cover broadleaf and coniferous forests. These mountains are moist, cool, cloudy and ready for heavy rainfall.

Life cycle and reproduction:

Territory of giant panda is marked with secretions of scent glands and scratches on the trees. Roaming range for male giant panda is more than the female giant panda which covers roaming range of many female giant pandas. Giant panda normally spends whole day in eating and sleeping. They are well known for climbing on trees and swimming.

Giant panda reproduce month of March to May. Female giant panda make a series of groans and bleats and give hints to the male giant panda that she wants to mate. Gestation period for female giant panda is around 5 months. After 5 months female giant panda delivers one or two cubs in the base of a hollow tree or in a cave. Size of cubs are very small i.e. 15cm and weight is around 100g. Even they cannot crawl till 3 months as they do not have hairs and also blind during birth. Female giant panda can take cares of her one cub only. Cub rides on her back till 6 months and after 18 months these cubs can leave her mother. But in some cases cubs can stay with her mother for a few years until she pregnant.

Feeding strategy:

Giant pandas classified as a carnivorous, consume more than 30 different species of bamboo but bamboo does not have nutritive value. Giant panda also consume grasses, fruits, birds, rodents etc. to supplement the diet. Giant panda consumes up to 30Kg of bamboo i.e. leaves, stems and shoots etc. Therefore giant panda spends around 12 to 15 hrs in a day in food consumption. Normally giant panda drinks water from melting of ice.

Unique characteristics:

As cubs of giant panda are very small in size (around 15 cm and weight around 100g) they are preyed upon by birds and leopards. Giant pandas are hunted by humans for fur. Harsh punishment is there for poaching to stop the hunting.

Conservation status:

Giant pandas were endangered species because they lost their habitat due to deforestation and clearance of land for agriculture purpose. But due to several Governmental and Non Governmental schemes they are now out of endangered and their number are around 2000 adult individuals. There are several projects going on to save their habitat and save them from extinction as they are one of the well known largest animal of the world. There are 33 reserves in China for giant panda and more than 50% of habitat is protected.

Problems/benefit to society:

Giant pandas are admirable by society. They help to increase the forest area, tourism, fisheries etc near to their habitat.

Ecological significance: Giant pandas help to maintain forests by spreading seeds mainly of bamboo seeds. By saving Giant pandas life we are increasing bamboo forests, tourism, transport, agriculture and fisheries as they form watersheds for Yangtze and yellow river.

Any other interesting information : Meaning of Ailuropoda melanoleuca (scientific name of panda) is “cat foot black and white”. Translation of Chinese name is “Giant bear cat”. They are also known as bamboo bear.
