Question

An astronaut has left the space shuttle on a tether to test a new personal maneuvering device.  She moves along a straight line directly away from the shuttle.  Her onboard partner measures her velocity before and after certain maneuvers, and obtains the following results:

A.  V1x =  0.8 m/sec and  V2x =1.2 m/sec

B.  V1x = 1.6 m/sec and  V2x =1.2 m/sec

C.  V1x = -0.4 m/sec and V2x =-1.0 m/sec

D.  V1x = -1.6 m/sec and V2x =-0.8 m/sec

If t1 = 2 sec and t2 = 4 sec in each case,

1.  Find the average acceleration for each set of data

2.  Explain by words the above results, and use a sketch (in terms of velocity and acceleration) to back up your explanation

3.  Draw part (a) only using the Cartesian system.  Indicate the average acceleration in the graph, and explain  by words the instantaneous acceleration.  Make sure to label the x- and y axis.

I need help with this... Thank you in advance!!!

Explanation / Answer

A) a = dv/dt = 0.4/2 = 0.2

B) -.4/2 = -0.2

C) -0.6/2 = -0.3
