Question

1. Respiration a. How does hyperventilation affect your ability to hold your breath? b. How does exercise affect your breathing rate? c. Which condition shortened the length of time you could hold your breath? d. How did hyperventilation and exercise affect the level of carbon dioxide in the blood? e. Which event caused the phenol red to become colorless to yellow more quickly? Why? f. What is the function of phenol red? g. How did body position affect pulse rate? Why? h. How do pulse rate and breathing rate relate to carbon dioxide in the blood?

Explanation / Answer

a. Hyperventilation increases O2 concentration in blood. So, we can hold our breath for a longer duration.

b. Exercise uses most of the oxygen present in the blood. Hence body shifts to anaerobic respiration during strenuous exercise. We need to breathe rapidly to supply enough oxygen to body cells to prevent accumulation of lactate.

c. Hyperventilation increases the duration of breath holding. Exercise reduces the length of breath holding duration.

d. Hyperventilation reduces blood CO2 levels. Exercise increases blood CO2 levels.
