Question

HI. Im having problems with my Physics homework. Please find the magnitude of acceleration of the two boxes and the forces given in the problem. PLEASE USE THE SAME EXACT NUMBERS:) THNKS

Alex is asked to move two boxes of books in contact with each other and resting on a rough floor. He decides to move them at the same time by pushing on box A with a horizontal pushing force Fp = 8.9 N. Here A has a mass mA = 11.0 kg and B has a mass mB = 7.0 kg. The contact force between the two boxes is Fc. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the boxes and the floor is 0.04. (Assume Fp acts in the +x direction.) What is the magnitude of the acceleration of the two boxes? m/s2 What is the force exerted on mb by mA? In other words what is the magnitude of the contact force Fc? N If Alex were to push from the other side on the 7.0-kg box, what would the new magnitude of Fc be? N

Explanation / Answer

let the blocks move to the right with an acceleration a

Fp-T-mew*ma*g=ma*a ..................(1)

T-mew*mb*g=mb*a .......................(2)

adding both equations we have

Fp-mew*g(ma+mb) =a(ma+mb)

8.9-0.04*9.8*(11+7)=a(11+7)

a=0.1024m/s2

b)force exerted on mb by ma

T=7*0.1024+0.04*7*9.8

T=3.461N

c) if alex wer to push on the other side of 7 kg box then

Fp-T-mew*mb*g=mb*a ..................(1)

T-mew*ma*g=ma*a ...........(2)

ADDING BOTH WE GET

Fp-mew*g(ma+mb)=a(ma+mb)

so a will be same but to teh left

and T=11*0.1024+0.04*11*9.8=5.4384N
