Question
A pendulum is created by attaching a bowling ball to the end of a L = 4 m cable
coming from the ceiling. The ball is released with the cable making an angle of ? = 30? with the
vertical. (a) Find the speed of the ball at the bottom of its swing (ignoring air resistance). (b)
Describe in words the energy conversion process that occurs with and without air resistance. (c) If
the ball is released with a speed of v = 4 m/s, what is the maximum height that it will reach when
swinging up the other side. You can ignore air resistance again.
Explanation / Answer
Change in Potential energy = change in kinetic energy
taking the lowest point as reference
mgl(1- cos 30) = 0.5 mV^2
v= 3.24 m/sec
in case of no air resistance ,gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy
with air resistance ,gravitational potential energy is converted to kinetic energy and heat energy due to air friciton so the final speed decreases
c)Change in Potential energy = change in kinetic energy
mgh -mgl(1- cos 30) = 0.5 m (16) final kinetic energy is zero at highest point
h = 1.35 m
