Question
1. What is your understanding of the term Inertia ?
How is it applied in common speech to things other than the physical ?
2. Give an example of Newton's first Law from your own exerience.
3. Since the moon's gravity is less than the earth's, if you gave a bowling ball a push with the same force on the earth and then on the moon what would you expect to see relative to the two accelerations produced, and why ?
4. If an object is in motion can it be in equilibrium. Explain on the basis of Newton's 3rd law.
Explanation / Answer
Inertia:The tendency of a body to resist acceleration; the tendency of a body at rest to remain at rest or of a body in straight line motion to stay in motion in a straight line unless acted on by an outside force.
OR
Resistance or disinclination to motion, action, or change
Physical Law take the same form in all inertial frames. By contrast, in a non inertial refrence frame the laws of physics vary depending on the acceleration of that frame with respect to an inertial frame, and the usual physical forces must be supplemented by ficitious force. For example, a ball dropped towards the ground does not go exactly straight down because the Earth is rotating. Someone rotating with the earth must account for the coriolis effect
