Question

A block weighing 100N is placed on an inclined plane that makes an angle of 30 degrees above the horizontal and is connected to a hanging block of weight "w" by a cord passing over a small frictionless pulley. The coefficient of static friction between the 100 N block and the incline is 0.52 and the coefficient of kinetic friction is 0.20.

a) Find the weight "w" for which the 100N block moves up the incline at constant speed once it has been set in motion.

b) Find the weight "w) for which it moves down the incline at constant speed.

c) For what rance of values of "w" does the block remain at rest if it is released from rest?

Thank you SO much!

Explanation / Answer

w - 100Sin30 - 0.2*100Cos30 = 0

w = 67.32 N

b)

w - 100Sin30 + 0.2*100Cos30 = 0

w = 32.68 N

c)

100Sin30 = 50 N

0.52*100*Cos30 = 45 N

w-50 > 45

w > 95 N

50 - w > 45

w < 5

Hence, 5 N < w < 95 N
