One component of a magnetic field has a magnitude of 0.0438  T and points along the +x axis, while the other component has a magnitude of 0.0798  T and points along the -y axis. A particle carrying a charge of +1.55

One component of a magnetic field has a magnitude of 0.0438 T and points along the +x axis, while the other component has a magnitude of 0.0798 T and points along the -y axis. A particle carrying a charge of +1.55 times 10-5 C is moving along the +z axis at a speed of 4.39 times 103 m/s. (a) Find the magnitude of the net magnetic force that acts on the particle. (b) Determine the angle that the net force makes with respect to the +x axis.

Explanation / Answer

a)

Fx =-qVz*By =-(1.55*10^-5)(4.39*10^3)(-0.0798)

Fx=5.43*10^-3 N

Fy=qVz*Bx =(1.55*10^-5)(4.39*10^3)(0.0438)

Fy=2.98*10^-3 N

Fnet=sqrt[Fx^2+Fy^2]=sqrt[(5.43*10^-3)^2+(2.98*10^-3)^2

Fnet=6.19*10^-3 N or 0.00619

b)

theta =tan^1-(Fy/Fx) =tan^-1(2.98*10^-3/5.43*10^-3)

theta =28.76 degrees
