Question
You are piloting a rescue plane delivering a bottle of Single Malt Scotch to some fisherman in a lake in the north of your city. Unfortunately, as you approach it the lake is fog-bound and you must deliver your relief using the navigation beacon of the fisherman. You check your ground speed and the lowest you can get it to is 105 Km/hr and the minimum height from which you can drop the package so that it is safe for you to be able to clear the trees on the other side of the lake is 58.0 m.
At what horizontal distance, in meters, from the the beacon must you drop your package? Assume that the fishermen have placed their beacon in their boat.
Explanation / Answer
h = gt^2/2 = 9.8 * t^2 /2 = 58
hence t = 3.44 sec
v = 105 km/hr = 29.17 m/s
horizontal distance = v *t = 29.17 * 3.44 = 100.33 meters
