Question

A person who normally weighs 200 pounds is standing on a scale inside an elevator. The elevator is moving upwards with a speed of 7 m/s, and then begins to decelerate at a rate of 5 m/s2(0.5 g). What is the reading on the scale before the elevator begins to decelerate? What is the reading on the scale during the deceleration?

I want to use mg=ma or Fw=F
However, I am confused about the 5m/s^2 and the 7 m/s ...one is a velocity and the other acceleration. Please help, and show work and explain please!
Thank you in advance

Explanation / Answer

200(9.8 - 0.5) = IS YOUR ANSWER as it eaccelerates N decreases , you can see free body diageam .. mg - N = ma N = mg - ma
