Question

Rank the point charges in order of largest to smallest magnitude of the force exerted on them by the sphere.

(I answered 5,1,3,4,2. Which was wrong.)

Five point charges, q1 = + q, q2 = + 2q, q3 = - 3q, q4 = - 4q, and q5 = - 5q, are placed in the vicinity of an insulating spherical shell with a charge + Q, distributed uniformly over its surface, as indicated in the figure. Rank the point charges in order of largest to smallest magnitude of the force exerted on them by the sphere. (I answered 5,1,3,4,2. Which was wrong.)

Explanation / Answer

since the magnitude is directly dependent on the charge the order is quite simple
q1 < q2 < q3 < q4 < q5
only magnitude is considered, ofcourse
