Question

You have gathered green turtle hatchlings from a beach where the magnetic field strength is 50 uT and the dip angle is 56 degrees. You then put the turtles in a 1.2 m diameter circular tank and monitor the direction in which they swim as you vary the magnetic field in the tank. You change the field by passing a current through a 100-turn horizontal coil wrapped around the tank. This creates a field that adds to that of the earth. What current should you pass through the coil, and in what direction, to produce a net field in the center of the tank that has a dip angle of 62 degrees?

Full credit for unique work. No copy/pastes from other sources - I have already seen those. Thank you.

Explanation / Answer

so current x component is 50*cos(56)

and y component is 50*sin(56)

we will add to the y direction till angle is 62

tan(62) = (50*sin(56) + y)/(50*cos(56))

y=1.11E-5 T

B = u0 N I/ 2 pi a

1.11E-5 = 4*pi*10^(-7)*100*I/(2*pi*0.6)

I=0.33 A
