Thank you.

A merry-go-round of radius R = 2.0 m and moment of inertia 500kg.m2 rotates about a frictionless pivot. It makes one revolution every 5 seconds. a child of mass 25 kg walks from the center (r = 0) to the edge, (r = R). Is this process elastic? (That is, is the kinetic energy the same when the child is at r = 0 and r = R?) Explain your answer in detail (that is, either why it is elastic, or, if it is inelastic, account for the most kinetic energy -- what happened to it?).

Explanation / Answer

i)i1w1=I2w2

i2=500+25*(4)=600

on sub values,

500*2(pi)/5=600*w

w=2(pi)/6

so it takes 6 sec for one rev

ii) I,w both change but kinetic energy need not be constant

angular momentum is conserved
