Question

I have looked up other examples and attempted plugging in the given values for this particular problem but have not had any luck on getting the correct answer. Also, the sitw (webassign) which I'm using to turn in the answer does not allow answers in scientific notation so I'm having a hard time figuring out how the final answer is supposed to be calculated. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks...

The drawing shows a 182-kg crate hanging from the end of a steel bar. The length of the bar is 0.05 m, and its cross-sectional area is 3.10x10^-4 m2. Neglect the weight of the bar itself.

(a) Determine the shear stress on the bar. N/m2

(b) Determine the vertical deflection %u2206Y of the right end of the bar.

Explanation / Answer

mass of the crate is m = 182 kg

steel bar S = 8.1 *10^10 N /m^2

length of the bar is l = 0.05 m

Area A = 3*10^-4 m^2

a ) stress on the bar is F / A = mg /A

                                               = 182 kg * 9.8 / 3 *10^-4 m^2

                                               = 5940000 N /m^2

=

b ) vertical deflection %u0394Y on the end of the bar is delY = F /A * L/ S

                                                        = 5.94*10^6 N /m^2 ( 0.05m /8.1 *10^10 N /m^2)

                                                         =0.00000366666 m
