Question

1. Beriberi is a disease caused by a deficiency of vitamin B le Thiamine is the precursor of thiamine pyrophosphate. In view of what you know about the metabolism of pyruvate, why is it not surprising that aleoholics tend to develop this disease? 2. Avidin, a protein found in egg whites, binds to biotin so strongly that it inhibits enzymes that require biotin. What is the effect of avidin on gluconeogenesis? How does the hydrolysis of fructose-1,6-bisphosphate bring about the reversal of one of the physiologically irreversible steps of glycolysis? 3. 4. Suggest a reason or reasons why the Cori cycle takes place in the liver and muscle. 5. How is it advantageous for animals to convert ingested starch to glucose and then to incorporate the glucose into glycogen?

Explanation / Answer

1)

Alcohol dehydrogenase reduces NAD+ to NADH and converts ethanol to acetaldehyde. Acetaldehyde combines with pyruvate to form acetoin with the involvement of Diphosphothiamine enzyme system. However, ethanol also reduces the intestinal absorption and transport of thiamine. This is the reason alcoholics tend to develop Vit B associated deficiency.
