chloroplast

colors of light other than green

4 points

Question 10

Suppose two cells are placed in a solution of distilled water. The cells are equal in every way, except that one cell has 1% sucrose inside and the other cell has 10% sucrose inside it. Which cell will gain water the fastest and why?

the cell with 1% sucrose since it has less solute (osmotic potential) than the distilled water

the cell with 1% sucrose since it has more solute (osmotic potential) than the other cell

the cell with 10% sucrose since it has less solute (osmotic potential) than the distilled water

the cell with 10% solute since it has more solute (osmotic potential) than the other cell

chlorophyll

mitochondria

chloroplast

colors of light other than green

Explanation / Answer

Q. 9 Mitochondria are not directly associated with the photosynthesis procedure. However, chlorophyll which is located inside the chloroplast is the major role player in photosynthesis. So these two are related with photosynthesis. Now, colour of light has a great impact on photosynthesis too. For example, different colour light has different wave length. So, different wave length lights are not absorbed equally by the plant. In Green light photosynthetic rate is lowest. However, in blue violet or orange red ranges are most effective. Mitochondria break the carbohydrate(product of photosynthesis) into carbondioxide and water in other process. It is not related to photosynthesis.

10) Option D is correct

We know that the liquid(here distilled water) moves to the side (which is seperated by semi permeable membrane) where the concentration of the solute is more. Now, the cell which contains 10% sucrose( this is solute) has greater solute concentration ( 10 unit of sucrose per 100 unit) than the cell containing 1% solute (1 unit of sucrose per 100 unit). So the osmotic potential is higher in case of first cell. Osmosis takes place faster where the osmotic potential is more. So, cell containing 10% sucrose will gain water more rapidly thus it will be swelled faster than the other cell.
