Question
A stretched spring, fixed at both ends, vibrates at a frequency of 12 Hz with a standing transverse wave pattern as shown. What is this spring's fundamental frequency and what would be the frequency of the first overtone?
IF the question seems like it can't be answered, try factoring in that the length of the waves last 4 seconds and go up to 4m. I have the answers I just can't seem to get the answers when I try it. You should end up with the fundamental frequency is 4hz and the freq. of the first overtone is 8hz. Thanks
Explanation / Answer
spring's fundamental frequency=4Hz(This is the third harmonic.)
frequency of the first overtone=8Hz(The first overtone is the second harmonic)
