Question

The three blocks shown are released from rest and are observed to move with accelerations that have a magnitue of 1.5 m/s^2. What is the magnitude of the friction force on the block that slides horizontally? Disregard any pulley mass or friction in the pulley and let M = 2.0 kg. In the figure a block with a mass of 4kg rests on a surface while being pulled from one side with a block whose mass is 2 kg that hangs from the side off a pulley system and on the other side the block on the surface is being pulled by a block whose mass is 4 kg that hangs from the side off a pulley system. I know the answer but I need to know how they got the answer.

Explanation / Answer

m1 = 2kg, m2 = 4kg, m3 = 4kg

(m_3g - T = m_3(1.5))

T = 33.2N

(T_2 - m_1g = m_1(1.5))

(T_2 = 22.6N)

(T - T_2 - f = m_2(1.5))

f = 4.6N friction force
