Question

A. (4 pts) Write out the beta oxidation pathway of Co-A ester of docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) (C22:5 A-cis- 7,10,13,16,19) nz ve B. (0.5 pts)CLEARLY MARK ( AND COUNT) EACH ROUND OF BETA OXIDATION ach round of beta oxidati and give totals D. (1.5 pts) Calculate the ATP that is produced when the fatty acyl Co A is oxidized to CO2 and H2O. E (0.5 pts). What is the effect of double bonds at odd carbons on the energy yield? F. (0.5 pts). What is the effect of double bonds at even carbons on the energy yield? G. (1.5pts)Apply what you just learned: You have a C8 fatty acid. What are you products of beta oxidation ( remember you could continue on to calculate ATP yield. Now assume there was a double bond at Carbon 3-what would your products be? What if the double bond was at carbon 4? Example table -DO NOT USE THIS ONE. YOU MUST MAKE YOUR OWN!! Round FADH2 produced NADH Produced Acetyl-Co A produced NADPH consumed TOTAL

Explanation / Answer

A and B. Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) is a straight chain 22:5 fatty acid, which contains 22 carbons and 5 double bonds.

when it will go through beta oxidation process it will produce 11 acetyl coA molecules. each acetyl co molecule will produce 3 NADH + 1 FADH2 + 1 GTP = 3 x 2.5+ 1 x 1.5 + 1 ATP =7.5+1+1 ATP = 10 ATP are produced per cycle.

during beta oxidation 10 FADH2 and 10 NADH will be produced along with 11 acetyl coA.

total energy production will be

10 FADH2 x 1.5 = 15

10 NADH x 2.5 = 25

11 acetyl coA X 10 = 110

thus total 150 ATP will be produce if each FADH2 produce 1.5 ATP and NADH produce 2.5 ATP.

E. if double bond is at odd carbon it will be converted into single bond by enoyl CoA isomerase enzyme. subesequently 1 acetyl coa will be produced.

F. in case of double bond at even number it will be converted to single bond by Dienoyl CoA reductase. followed by isomerase to produce acetyl CoA. remaining will be converted directly into Acetyl CoA.
