Question

In Figure 7.16 in the textbook a glider with mass m = 0.200 kg sits on a frictionless horizontal air track, connected to a spring with force constant k = 5.00 N/m. The glider is released from rest with the spring stretched 0.100 m. What is the displacement x of the glider from its equilibrium position when its speed is 0.20 m/s? (You should get more than one answer.) Enter your answers numerically separated by a comma. Express your answer using two significant figures. Explain why you get more than one answer. Essay answers are limited to about 500 words (3800 characters maximum, Including spaces).

Explanation / Answer

Force on the spring F=kx --> acceleration(a) = k/m

Simple harmonic motion with =k/m:

v2=2(x02-x2) --> (0.2^2)=(5/0.2)*(0.1^2-x^2)

solving this equation x=±0.091651m

there are 2 solutions because on solution is when the spring is stretched by 0.091651, and the other is when the spring is compressed by the same value
