Question

Suppose you are camping and need electricity to run a cd player. You wind a 100 turn coil of radius 20cm and place it below a long, straight power line above your campsite. The power line carries and electric current of maximum magnitude 100-A that reverses direction each 1/120 seconds. Estimate the induced emf in your coil during the time interval that the current changes from 100-A in one direction to 100-A in the other direction.

Please include all steps inluding equations (not simplified versions of equations). This is an algebra based physics course. I may have follow up questions. Thank you.

Explanation / Answer

take the height of campsite to be arnd 5m

so the MF at coil = Uo i/2pir = Uo i/10*pi (MF is taken uniform over coil)

the MF in coil = [Uo i/10*pi]*100*pi(.2)^2 = Uo*i(.4)

change in flux in 1/120 sec = Uo(.4) (200) = 80*Uo

so emf induced = 80*Uo/(1/120) = 1.2*10^-2 V
