Question
A. Using Principles of Physics including work and kinetic energy, explain why athletes always release the javelin some distance behind the line.
B. The best athletes manage to throw over 90 meters. Good throwers always throw their javelin so that it flies up some substantial height above the ground. Using Principles of Physics, explain why this benefits the athlete.
C. The best javelin throwers are always large people with very strong bodies. Use principles of physics including Work and Kinetic Energy to explain why such people are best at throwing javelins.
Explanation / Answer
A)
The athletes throw the javelin behind the line because at that point there momentum is maximum they can attain so they transfer there momentum into the javelin and it helps them to stop before the line.
B)
The best thrower always try to throw a javelin at an inclination of 45 deg as the vertical distance is largest when the angle is 45.
Range of projectile = u^2sin(2theta)/g so it will be max at angle = 45
Sol to get the javelin as far as they can they get a substantial height to them
C)
momentum = mass*velocity
so if you have the same velocity then what matters is mass
strong body athletes have got power as their weight is more.
so the moment they can transfer is more which causes them to be a good thrower
