Question
Two charged plates create a potential difference of 190 V. At a point halfway between the plates an electron is released from rest. At the same time a proton is also halfway between the plates, but far enough away from the electron to ignore the interaction between the two. Both strike the plates at the same time. What was the initial speed and direction of the proton?
I know this question is already all over chegg, but I don't feel like they are the right answer or I could not understand their work. PLEASE do not copy and paste a previous answer, that will not be helpful to me. I appreciate who can walk me through this concept and the work involved to find the solution. Thank you
Explanation / Answer
sorry i did a mitake i forgot the mass of e and proton
let thge distance betn plates be 2d
now
at d electron is released from rest and travels d distance
E=V/2d
acceleration=qE/m1
so
d=1/2(q*v/2dm1)t2
t=(4d^2m1/qv)^1/2
let initial velocity of proton be u
acc=-qE/m2
d=ut-1/2at^2
solving and equating time we get
u=(m1/m2)*(qv/m1)^1/2*2
u=6.5*10^3
