Question

Uranium 235 and Uranium 238 isotopes are ionized so that they have two more electrons than protons (a net charge equal to the charge of two electrons). Uranium 235's mass is about 235 times that of a proton. Uranium 238's mass is about 238 times the mass of a proton. The uranium is between the plates of 20 cm by 20 cm parallel plate air capacitor wit ha voltage differential of 480 volts and 4 cm plate separation.

a. What is the capacitance of the capacitor
C = 4.427*10^-11
b. What is the Electric Field's Magnitude

c. What force is exerted on a uranium ion

d. What is the potential energy change when one atom of either isotope moves two (2) centimeters at an angle at 45 degrees to the electric field

e What is uranium 235 isotopes velocity change?

f. If a 4 tesla magnetic field is perpendicular to the electric field, and the isotopes have a final velocity of 10,000 m/s what is the radius of curvature for each isotope

I believe I figured out a but the rest I am lost on. Please help!

Explanation / Answer

(b) Electric field = v/d = 480/0.04 = 12000v/m...... (c) force = E*q..... q = 12000 * 2*1.6*10^-19 = 3.84*10^-15 N.... (d) dE = F*s cos45 = 3.84*10^-15 * 0.02 cos45 = 5.43*10^-17 J.... (e) If initial velocity is 0, then 1/2 mv^2 = dE.... v = 16622 m/s....
