Question

6. Migration among populations is said to "prevent the loss of variation that would otherwise occur by genetic drift".

a. Explain why you agree or disagree with this statement.

b. Conservation biologists are very concerned about the effects of human development causing blocks in migration for some types of animals (e.g. elephant populations in Sri Lanka). One solution is to maintain "corridors" for migration. Explain why you think such a solution would or would not help to prevent the extinction of endangered species.

Explanation / Answer

6. a. Most animals migrate inorder to prevent loss of variation. they migrate to escape extreme conditions so that they can survive by avoiding extreme conditions. It is mainly a behavioral adaptation. If not migration, the animals which cannot adapt to the extreme conditions will die and leads to loss of gene pool which causes loss of variation.

b. Human development like housing, roads, water ways, dams and bridges block the migratory routes of some animals thus causing problem to the migration which may become a cause for the extinction of the species.

Wild life corridor is a link of wildlife habitat, which joins two or more larger areas of similar wildlife habitat. These corrodors help in maintaining ecological process by allowing the movement of animals for continuation of viable populations.

By providing landscape connections between larger areas of habitat, corridors help in migration, colonization and interbreeding of plants and animals.
