Question
Two capacitors whose capacitances are 1F and 3F respectively are initially charged up by connecting
them to a battery that supplies 1.5V of voltage. They are then removed from the battery (keeping the
charge on their plates intact), and connected to each other with the positive plate of one connected to
the negative plate of the other. Charge is allowed to flow between the capacitors as desired, until the
system reaches equilibrium.
i) What is the voltage difference between a and b?
ii) What are the charges on each capacitor?
Explanation / Answer
equivalent capacitance=3*1/(3+1)
=0.75 F
so charge=CV
=1.125 C
so let the charge flowed be q.so,
applying KVL,
(1.125-q)/1 + (1.125-q)/3 =0
or q=1.125
so the final charge on each=0
i)what is a and b?
ii)charge=0C
