A 5.00 cm-thick layer of oil is sandwiched between a 1.00 cm-thick sheet of glass and a 2.00 cm-thick sheet of polystyrene plastic. How long (in ns) does it take for light incident perpendicular to the glass to pass through this 8.00 cm-thick sandwich? (Points : 20)
Explanation / Answer
refractive index of oil=1.47
refractive index of glass=1.5
refractive index of polystyrene=1.57
so speed of light in a medium=c/n
where n is the refractive index.
also time=distance/speed
so,
time= 1.47*0.05/(3*10^8) + 1.5*0.01/(3*10^8) + 1.57*0.02/(3*10^8)
=4*10^-10 s
