Question

(8 points) The figure below show a graph of enzyme substrate affinity for the same enzyme in different species of ectotherm. A. Why do the values change with different temperature? mmon theme is illustrated when you look at the values for all the species? C. You might expect the shape of the curve for a seal, which can live in cold and warm waters, would be rather different. Draw a curve for the seal on the graph and explain what factor has influenced the shape of your curve. (B) Enzyme-substrate affinity as a function of in six goby South American fish 3.3 water goby 50 30 40 20 Temperature (°C) 0 10

Explanation / Answer

7 A. The values changes with temperature because as the temperature increases or the enzyme reaches the optimal conditions causes the deactivation of enzymes and therefore the enzyme cannot bind to the substrate.

B. Prefered body temperature and optimal temperature co evolve in the above for all the species and the substrate is constant at ordinary body temperature.

C. Initial change in the body tempearture of seals ,acclimation leads to return to the original state.when animal shift to much colder temperatures the animal will compensate by postrual changes or by shifing to anaerobic metabolism or by increasing heart rate.
