Question
What do we call a fungus that colonizes plant leaves but does not cause a plant disease?
basidiomycete
endophyte
mycorrhiza
truffle
lichen
Many birds can fly and we cannot. Mark the three (3) adaptations that help explain this.
Birds breathe more efficiently than we do.
Birds don’t have a large urinary bladder.
*The bones of birds are light while ours are heavy.
Birds do not have internal fertilization.
Birds are ectotherms.
Birds are endotherms.
An animal can walk or fly; it cannot do both.

Explanation / Answer
The fungus that colonizes leaves and does not cause any disease is endophyte. The fungus and the plant live in symbiotic association. The fungal endophytes enhance the survival of their host plants by production of secondary metabolites which protect against herbivory and increase nutrient uptake.
Mycorhhiza and truffles form association with roots. Lichen is association of fungus and algae. Basidiomycetes do not form any symbiotic association.
The three adaptations that explain why birds fly are:
1) Birds breathe more efficiently than we do. This is due to the presence of air sacs that connect to the lungs. This enables birds to extract more oxygen from each breath of air.
2) Birds don't have a large urinary bladder. In fact, urinary bladder is absent to reduce weight. The nitrogenous wastes are eliminated immediately and not stored.
3) The bones of birds are light while ours are heavy. Many of a bird's bones are hollow which makes them light. This makes the body of a bird lightweight and ideal for flight.
