Question

  Transformers A and B step change the voltage between 3 circuits. Transformer A connects circuits 1 and 2. Transformer B connects circuits 2 and 3. The voltage in circuit 1, V1, is 1200 V and the current in circuit 1, I1, is 40 A. The turn ratio of transformer A is, NPA:NSA = 1:5. The voltage is circuit 3, V3, is 50 V and the number of turns in the secondary coil of transformer B, NSB, is 120 turns.

a.      What are the potential and the current in circuit 2?

b.      What is the number of turns in the primary coil of transformer B?

c.       What is the current in circuit 3?

d.      What is the power in circuits 1, 2 and 3?

Explanation / Answer

a). V2/V1 = N2/N1
=> V2/1200 = 5
=> V2 = 6000 V

i2/i1 = N1/N2
=> i2/40 = 1/5
=> i2 = 8 A

b).V2/V3 = N/120
=> 6000/50 =N/120
=> N= 14400

c). i3/i2 = 14400/120
=> i2/8 = 120
=>i2 = 960 A

d). P = I*V

so, P1 = 1200*40 =48000 W
P2 = 6000*8 = 48000 W

P3= 50* 960 = 48000 W
