Question

Nick is sitting in a swing thet has a rope attached to it. The rope then goes through a pulley attached to a tree above him and the loose end of the rope is then put in Nicks hand as he sits on the swing. He wants to be able to pull himself upward as a result. The rope is nearly massless so it has a constant tension throughout, this means that the force that Nick pulls down on the loose end is equal to the force the rope exerts on the swing with the tied end. Nicks mass is 100kg. the swings mass is 40kg. and Nicks pulling force is 750N.

a.Find the contact normal force between Nick and the swing.

b.Will Nick move upward? Determine Nicks acceleration.

c. What is the minimum force Nick must exert on the rope in order to make the swing and himself move upwards?

Explanation / Answer

net force on nick+swing = (100+40)g -2 T = 1400 -2*750 = 100 N (upward)

net accelaration = 100/140 = 0.71m/s2 (up)

normal force on nick = 100(g+0.71) +750 = 1821 N

minimum force required for going up = g(m1+m2)/2 = 700N
