Question

You wish to build the structure as shown below. The horizontal uniform slab has a length of L = 9.0 m and has a mass of m = 300 kg (it is the gray part of the diagram). You will support it from below at d = 1.2 m from its right edge and the other support will be at its right edge. What force would each support have to exert on the slab? (Use a negative sign to indicate a downwards force.)

(From webassign.net)

The work that I have already tried for this problem:

Right Support = 300(9.8) x [(0.5x9)-1.2)] = -9702N, since it has a downward force

Left Support = 300kg(9.8) + 9702 = 12642N

Explanation / Answer

Right support=mass of the slab x gravity x [(0.5length of slab) - distance]

= 300kg * 9.8m/s^2 * [(0.5 * 9.0m) - 1.2m]

= -9702 N

---------------------------------------

Left Support = mass of slab x gravity + force exerted on right support

= 300kg * 9.8m/s^2 + 9702

= 12642 N
