Question
Worksheet 1 Botany Students, In lecture today we covered flower structures found in the Angiosperms. You need to learn two important events that occur during the life cycle of the Angiosperms- double fertilization and pollination. I would for you to understand information concerning the relationship between DNA and Chromosomes. Also how DNA segregates out during mitosis and meiosis. The questions below should be a review from genetics and freshman biology. A meristematic cell located in the root apical meristem before it has started to undergo cell division was discovered to contain 10 DNA molecules. Answer the following questions concerning DNA and chromosomes number during mitosis and after mitosis. Draw below the meristematic cell above showing the 10 DNA molecules in the form of chromosomes as they would appear in Gl stage; Prophase stage; two daughter cells after mitosis. How many DNA molecules would present during the G2 stage of the cell cycle? How many homologous chromosome pairs would present during the prophase stage of the cell cycle? How many chromatids would present during the metaphase stage of the cell cycle? How many homologous pairs would present during the metaphase stage of the cell cycle? How many chromosomes would present in cach cell after cytokinesis during telophase? DNA molecules? Homologous DNA pair? Are chromatids of homologous chromosome pairs genetically alike? Are sister chromatids of prophase chromosomes genetically alike? Would the "mother cell" (cell during Gl stage) be diploid or haploid? Would the two daughter cells formed after mitosis and cytokinesis be diploid or haploid? During anaphase which structures are pulled to opposite poles? B. Sister chromatids of each chromosome. D. Random chromosome pairs.Explanation / Answer
RAM cell is diploid.
2n = 10
n = 5
1. DNA replication occurs during S phae. G2 phase occurs after S phase. So, 20 DNA molecules will be found at G2 stage.
2. During prophase, chromosomes are not yet fully condensed, homologous chromosomes do not form pairs during prophase (if they were to form pairs, there would be 10 pairs which can be observed during metaphase).
3. 2n = 10. So, number of chromatids in metaphase = 40.
4. 2n = 10. So, 10 homologous pairs would be present during metaphase.
5. Mitosis does not reduce chromosome number. So, number of chromosomes after cytokinesis in daughter cells = 20.
