Question
in this experiment , we have to find the momentum before and after two carts collides to each other, the carts are in rest before colliding. In trial 1, the impulse applied by the spring on each cart is the same size.(this is true again in trial 2, and in every trial, although the impulse may be different in each trial.). Explain clearly and completely why in trial 3 the impulse applied by the spring on the left cart is the same size as the impulse by the spring on the right cart. Use the physics meaning of the term "impulse".
Explanation / Answer
trail 1
before colliding rest impulse applied is same = change in momemtum = mass * velocity ,,if carts have same mass then they have same sine consider carts and spring as a system we get no eexternal force so momentum of system conserves so final mometun of sytstem is also zero so carts move in oppsoite directions , their speeds depends on their masses
trail 2
if impulse applied is different then then they have diferenre tmomentum which mean s net momentum is not equal to zero that means some external force is acting
trail 3
if external force acting is zero then momentum conserves whic means impulse aslso conerves impulse will be same on both
