Question

I am still looking for the heat transfer a woman generates when she is shoveling snow. Givens are that she metabolizes food at the rate of 800W and she has to life 3000 Kg of snow 1.2 m ( this is the equivalent of 20 m footpath). I found the 85 Watts BMR in another chart, but have nothing else to go on. Using this, I calculated a time to shovel of 49 seconds, which seemed much too fast, but on one contradicted me. From this, I need to solve for heat transfer in Kilojoules, but the number I obtain seems extremely high. Anyone have an idea?

Explanation / Answer

Work done=mgh=3000*9.8*1.2=35280J

Useful power output=800-85=715W

time=W/P=49.3s.

Clearly some other metabolic rate must be used.
