Question

This is a 3-pat questions that has me stumped. A person shoveling snow metabolizes food at the rate of 800W. What is her useful power output? How long will it take her to lift 3000 kg of snow 1.20m ( this could be the amount of snow on a 20m path). How much waste heat transfer in Kilojoules will she generate in the process? I found a table that lists basal metabolic rate as 85W, so I am assuming that I simple subtract 800W-85W to get her useful power output, but I am not sure. And I keep getting 49 seconds to shovel the snow, which is totally impossible, so any help would be appreciated.

Explanation / Answer

Yes, your method is correct,

Useful power output = 800-85 = 715 W <---------answer(1)

So, time taken to lift = mgh/P = 3000*9.8*1.2/715 = 49 s <-----answer(2)
