1. Synovial joints can be classified based on the shape of the bone ends that make up the joints. For example, a plane joint consists of two flat or nearly flat bone ends that can slide over one another. These joints allow only gliding or sliding movements, are multi-axial such as the articulation between vertebrae. E.g: carpals of the wrist.
2. Joints classified as Pivot joints have one cylindrical end articulates with a ring made up of another bone and ligament. One bone rotates about another. E.g: proximal radio-ulnar joint, and distal radio-ulnar joint
3. Joints consisting of the head of one bone fitting into a cup-shaped depression on the other bone are called Ball and Socket joints. These allow for all movements except gliding. E.g: shoulder and hip joints .
4. If one bone end within a joint is convex and the other is concave the joint is called a Hinge joint. If both bone ends each have convex and concave regions the joint is a Saddle joint. The two surfaces are reciprocally concavoconvex in shape, which resemble a saddle, permit the same movements as the condyloid joints but allow greater movement. E.g: Sternoclavicular joint.
Hinge joints allow flexion and extension in just one plane. E.g elbow
5. Joints with one oval-shaped rounded bone end that articulates with an elliptical cavity on another bone end are classified as Condylar joints. This is a modified ball and socket joint that allow primary movement within two perpendicular axes, passive or secondary movement may occur on a third axes. E.g: wrist joint.
