2. Aortic Valve Replacement A patient with a stenosed aortic valve has a pressure drop across the diseased valve of 30 mmHg at a CO of 5 L/min and a HR of 72 bpm. The healthy valve orifice area should be 21 mm. The patient undergoes an aortic valve replacement. The new aortic valve is a 20-mm bileaflet valve. After surgery, the mean velocity just downstream of the replacement valve is measured to be 1.01 m/s. Assume a discharge coefficient of 0.62 for the valve Compare the pre-and post-surgical ?p and Performance Indices. Based on these two measures, was the surgery successful?Explanation / Answer
Given that Pressure drop across the diseased valve = 30 mm of Hg
HR = 72 bpm
Diameter of the healthy valve = 21 mm
New orifice valve length = 20 mm
The mean velocity = 1.01 m/sec
Now when we replace the old aortic valve with the new valve, than
Pre-surgical mean pressure-gradient = 30 mm of Hg
the above one determines the stenosis of the aortic valve
And
Post surgival mean transaortic pressure-gradient = 4.08 mm of Hg
Which determines the surgery results in treatment
Stenosis of the aortic valve aims to decrease in blood outflow through aortic valve as it is after the surgery valve orifice area has returned to normal orifice area and new aortic valve area is 3.14 cm^2 which is in normal condition. So the surgery results are in a successful way.
