Question

For brake design assembly of three parts illustrated below, discuss the manufacturing of the 1) hub, 2) return springs, and 3) brake lining part. (a) Describe the manufacturing processes for the (hub, return springs, and brake lining) parts and why you would select the process (b) Recommend the materials that could be used for the (hub, return springs, and brake lining) parts and your reason for it (e) How are these parts assembled with the rest of the parts? Describe the potential manufacturing process 1 to 2 pages text per part maximum plus 2 pages sketches or figures maximum] Return springs Wheel cylinder Parking brake actuating lever Hold-down spring and clip Brake lining Push rod Adjustment retaining spring Hub Star wheel adjusting nut Brake shoe

Explanation / Answer

(a,b) Brake hub is made of alloy steel and cast. After casting it is machined and surface heat treated.

Return springs are made of alloy steel and hit wound. Thicker wires can be coiled to spring if heated. Then it is hardened and ends are ground. Then shot peening is done to enhance fatigue resistance and to increase servicalility.

Brake lining is made of metal matrix composites. They can be manufactured by powder metallurgy, casting, friction stir processing etc. They abrasion resistant.

c) For the functionality of brake initially assembly of individual like brake caller fitted with cylinder is done. Then each sub assemblies, each having individual assemblies assembled altogether.
