Question
(4) Table Q1(4) shows candidate materials for making wires for electrical appliances and machines. Which material makes the best conductor in the following applications? (a) An electrical machine which requires as many conducting elements as possible in a given space (ie. A space-limited design). (b) An overhead power cable for which the weight of conductor is a major design criterion, but for which there is no space problem. Assuming a conductor of a given length l and electrical resistance R for each application: (i) Specify a property criterion for the selection of a material for the conductor. (ii) Use the property data in Table Q4 to rank the three best materials.Explanation / Answer
(a) An electric machine which requires as many conducting melements as possible in a given space.
(i) Here conductivity shoubld be as high as possible as we have space constraint and wish to accomodate as many conductors as possible in given space. (Resistivity should be low)
(ii) Silver>Copper>Aluminium
(b) An overhead power cable for which weight of the conductor is major design criteria.
(i) Density of the conductor should be as low as possible in order that given volume of conductor weighs as less as possible.
(ii) Aluminium>Iron>Copper
