The issue: A software engineer discovers that a colleague has been downloading restricted files that contain trade secrets about a new product that the colleague is not personally involved with. He knows the colleague has been having financial problems, and the software engineer fears that the colleague is planning to sell the files or start his own company. Being a friend he should talk him out off from whatever he's doing but as the company's code of ethics requires it to be reported to the higher authorities he must report about the data that has been downloaded by his friend so company can take necessary actions to prevent any harm or to undo the harm that has been done. He can help both the sides by providing what is required that is proper counselling and assistance to his friend and in the same time providing the information about the leak to the company while keeping the source anonymous.
