Please answer all 9 questions, promise you will get at least 3 thumbs up. Thanks
1. Which type of genetic test can be performed on an embryo at the 8-cell stage?
2. Which type of genetic test would you use to determine if you are a carrier for a recessive disorder before starting a family?
3. Which one of the following treatments for lysosomal storage diseases uses a drug that binds to a patient's misfolded protein, restoring function?
a.substrate reduction therapy.
b.pharmacological chaperone therapy.
c. enzyme replacement therapy.
d. all of the above.
e.none of the above.
4.Two types of treatments for genetic disorders include replacing gene products and replacing genes.
True False
5. Exome sequencing can be used to diagnose rare diseases.
True False
6. List one problem associated with the use of viral vectors for gene therapy (please do not list "death").
7. List ONE concern that YOU have about personal genome sequencing. Please use your own words to explain why this is a concern for you.
8.Which one of the following statements is false?
9.Results from direct-to-consumer genetic tests can provide risk estimation for certain well-studied traits but are not necessarily reliable and can even cause anxiety if results are not reviewed with a professional, such as a genetic counselor.
Only one strand of the DNA double helix is broken when CRISPR/Cas9 technology is used to edit genomes.
One of the outcomes of the Human Genome Project is that scientists are learning how genetic variation contributes to disease.
A drug that mimics exon skipping is being tested to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
Personal genome sequencing has been made possible due to automated "next generation" sequencing techniques
Explanation / Answer
Hi,
1. blastomere biopsy. Here 1 -2 cells are removed from the 8-cell embryo by puncturing the protective layer of the embryo.
2. Carrier screening is done to detetmine whether a person carries any mutations that might affect the future child. These tests look for recessive copies of disease causing genes. Example: screening of cystic fibrosis.
3. All the above. The substrate reduction and chaperon therapy helps in proper folding and safe storage inside the lysozome.
4. False. The gene therapy involves the repair or replcament of gene causing the disease. The gene products are given in certain conditions but it does not cure the disorder only helps to mitigate it.
5. true. Exons are the coding sequences, which code for proteins. Any muations in exon can reflect in faulty protein and possible disorders.
6. Viral vectors: The use of viral vector has the risk of viral relapse. The viral vectors are attenuated. But since viruses have high rate of mutation, their mutation into a full virus cannot be ruled out.
7. The personel genome sequencing can cause division in society. The genetic disorders are the chance events with rare occurance. However knowledge of genetic sequences can put many lives under risk, many marriages under threat of divorse and many children homeless. The people would descriminate based on genetic superiority and this would create new caste divisions in the society.
8. The statement: CRISPR/Cas9 is false. The Cas9 cuts both the strands of DNA at specific locations.
Question 9 is a part of option of question 8.
