Question

Write down Maxwell's equations (Equation) and briefly describe each (Name). A horizontal beam of light enters a 45*/90*/45* prism at the center of its long side, as shown in the figure below. The emerging ray moves in a direction that is 34* below the horizontal. What is the index of refraction of this prism (n_p)? Assume the index of the surrounding the prism is n = 100. A string with linear mass density of 47 g/m is held taunt so that the tension in the string is 75 N. A harmonic wave of amplitude A = 13 mm and frequency f = 32 Hz propagates along the string. What is the average power in the wave?

Explanation / Answer

let the index of refraction=n

for incidence at the perpendicular side, let incident angle be t degrees.

using snell's law:

n*sin(t)=1*sin(34)....(1)

then angle of the upper triangle =90-t

then the rest angle of the upper triangle (refracted ray inside the prism and upper two edges of the prism) =180-(90-t)-45=45+t degrees

so angle of refraction for the first ray=90-(45+t)=45-t degrees

using snell's law:

n*sin(45-t)=sin(45)....(2)

dividing equation 1 by 2:

sin t/sin(45-t)=sin(34)/sin(45)

(sin 45*cos t-cos 45*sin t)/sin t=sin 45/sin 34

solving for t, we get t=19.73 degrees

then using this value of t n equation 1:

we get n=1.6564
