An infinite conductor carrying a current of 4A is placed on the z-axis, and a copper conductor of length 2 cm is placed on the y-axis as shown Suppose the conductor positive z-direction with a velocity 1 is moving in the cm/sec as shown Figure 1. Find the voltage induced in the conductor. Show in the polarity of the induced voltage. Suppose the conductor is moving along the y-axis in the positive y-direction with a velocity 1 cm/sec as shown in Figure 2. Find the voltage induced on conductor. Show the polarity of the induced voltage. Compare and discuss the above two results.

Explanation / Answer

A) Note: length of conductor is 1 cm as given in figure of the question , not 2 cm as given in text of the question

V = rate of change of flux

= integral v*uoi dx/2pix

= 0.01*2e-7*4* ln (2/1)

= 5.545*10^-9 V, left end positive.

B) V = BLv = 2e-7*4/0.01 * 0.01*0.01

= 8*10^-9 V, top end positive.

C) emf induced in second case is more because conductor is closer in second case. So magnetic field is more.
