Question
Write clearly and with sufficient detail, so that the reader can understand what you are doing and why. Give proper drawings, calculations, and units. Each question is worth 20 points. Answer only Two of the following questions. You may answer the third question but will be awarded only 5 points -be sure to denote which question is for the 5 extra points. A cotton ball and a glass marble are each launched horizontally from the edge of a table. They are launched with the same initial speed, and to the floor. The marble's mass is about 100 times the mass of the cotton ball. The cotton ball's diameter is about 2 times that of the marble. The height of the table is 1 meter above the floor. Predict where each object would hit the floor. You must clearly explain any assumptions you made. The Sun produces Lyman-alpha (n = 1) and Balmer-alpha (n = 2) excitations of Hydrogen atoms. These excitations correspond to a photon energy of 10.20 eV and 1.889 eV [1 electron volt (eV) = 1.6 times 10^-19 Joule]. a. What are the wavelengths for these two types of photons? b. What are the final states of these two transitions? c. If we wanted an electron to end in the n = 5 state, would it be easier to start in the n = 1 state or the n = 2 state? Why? The Apollo lunar module (LM) could make a safe landing if its speed at impact was 3.0 m/s or less. The pilot shuts off the engine, and when the LM is at a height h from the Moon's surface its downward speed is zero. (g moon = 1.62 m/s^2). Draw graphs of x- and y-velocity versus time, and x- and y- acceleration versus time for the LM. Consider the module and its occupants as the system and determine the maximum value of h for which the impact speed is 3.0 m/s. You must start from a fundamental physics principle. Explain any approximations you made.Explanation / Answer
If you neglect the resistance due to air, both objects will falls at same time. This was even tested on moon by astronauts.
However, air resistance if taken into consideration, will be more on objects with more Surface area.
As cotton ball has more diameter, so surface area = d2.
So cotton ball will be landing a little later than marble.
Acceleration due to gravity is same on both objects i.e
g= GMearth/(R2earth). Nelecting height of box on which marbles, ball is place.
