I don't know how to get these answers and help is appreciated! Thank you.
A power supply on the right is connected to two long parallel conducting rails. A conducting crossbar lies on the rails. Cument flows out of the power supply, down one rail. through the crossbar, and then back to the power supply on the other rail. (a) Carefully indicate the direction of the current in the two rails and in the crossbar. Does current flow in the rails to the left of the crossbar? (b) The currents in the rails produce magnetic fields. What is the direction of the magnetic field in the region between the rails? Take both rails into account and explain carefully. (c) What is the direction of the magnetic force on the crossbar? is is the direction in which the crossbar will be launched.) Explain carefully.

Explanation / Answer

a) The current will flow in the counterclockwise direction.

As the current from one rod get a opening in the crossbar to move therefore it will not go to the left of crossbar

b)

now the emf E=-d/dt of flux

flux=B*L

where L is the seperation of two conducting rails

then E=-d/dt(B*L)=-LvB

again total voltage in the power source=IR

where R is considered as the power supply resistance

then -LvB=IR

therefore B is directed into the page

c) now magnetic force F=|I|*L*B=-ILbx'

so its direction will be normal to the plane of v cross B
