Question

#20 Plz I need solution answer is D

why is not answer c??

The next four questions pertain to the situation described below. A beam of unpolarized light of intensity I_in travels in the +z direction and goes through an arrangement of two linear polarizers as shown in the figure. The surface of the polarizers are parallel to the xy plane. The transmission axes of the polarizers are oriented at theta_1 = 45 degree and theta_2 = 80 degree. What is the intensity of the light transmitted through the second polarizer? a) 0.164 I_in b) 0.329 I_m c) 0.335 I_in d) 0.671 I_m e) 0.933 I_in A quarter wave plate with its fast axis aligned with the x axis and its slow axis aligned with the y axis is inserted between the two linear polarizers. What is the intensity of the light transmitted through the second polarizer? a) 0.67 I_in b) 0.18 I_in c) 0.25 I_in Before it reaches the second linear polarizer, the light transmitted by this quarter wave plate has a) right circular polarization b) left circular polarization c) elliptical polarization A second quarter wave plate, also with its fast axis aligned with the x axis and its slow axis aligned with the y axis, is inserted between the first quarter wave plate and the second linear polarizer. The intensity of the light downstream of the second linear polarizer is now a) 0.015 I_in b) 0.125 I_in c) 0.25 I_in d) 0.34 I_in e) 0.47 I_in

Explanation / Answer

I have done the calculation. Since it produce circularly polarized light after passing through the quarter wave plate. The final intensity must be one fourth of the initial intensity. So I think the given ans is probably wrong since option "c" is correct
