Question
An electromagnetic signal is generated by a Hertzian dipole located at a point P, which has the position vector r = -(100 m) e_z. The signal is detected by a small wire loop located at the origin. Apart from the dipole and the loop, the nearby space is empty. Experimentation reveals that the detected signal is induced by a changing magnetic field: B_phys (t) = B_0 sin (2 pi ft) e_x, where B_0 = 0.1 mu T and f = 30 MHz. (b) Explain quantitatively why the form of the magnetic field due to the dipole at P is well-approximated by a plane wave in the region. -1Explanation / Answer
As dipole, which is source of electromagnetic wave is very tiny and the wave is detected at a distance of 100 meteres which is quite large as compared to the size of a dipole hence part of wave generated by it becomes plane wave at the detector.
