Question

1.      You are on a grant review committee reviewing grant proposals. One of your proposals is to study the protein forgettin – discovered by your grant applicant. She discovered the forgettin protein which is synthesized by the pineal gland in human teenagers. She believes it is responsible for their selective hearing, especially when asked to complete a task, such as cleaning their room. Her hypothesis is that forgettin has a hydrophobic C-terminus ER signal sequence which is recognized by an SRP and causes it to be translocated into the ER. Based on what you know about protein translocation into the ER – should you fund her research? Explain the reasoning behind your decision.

Explanation / Answer

Yes, I will fund her research as forgettin protein have hydrophobic C-terminus and uncharged carboxyterminal region that act as a signal peptide for the translocation of the protein in the Endoplamic reticulum. Along with that signal recognition particle , are too present in the receptor of ER that helps in the translocation of protein in ER.
