Question

1. You are interviewing for a production engineering position within a manufacturing company that manufactures drivetrains for agricultural equipment. You are asked to describe two areas where technical standards would impact the design, manufacturing, or testing of the drivetrains and why it is necessary for such standards to exist.

2. In the same interview, you are asked to identify two types of gears, provide a practical application of each, and explain the technical information that one would need to include in a mechanical drawing to ensure the proper manufacturing of each type of gear.

3. While designing a machine for a manufacturing company you have determined that you will need to apply a class 1 force fit between the drive shaft and a drive wheel, while applying a class 5 Running Sliding fit between the same shaft and a housing on the opposite end. Determine the tolerances for both the hole and the shaft on each end of drive shaft if the nominal size is DIA. .375.

4. You have purchased the following shaft from McMaster CARR (PN 1346K32) and would like to apply an FN 3 fit between the shaft and a custom machined support for the shaft. Determine what the tolerance for the hole will be based on the vendor’s tolerance for the shaft.

Explanation / Answer

1.areas where technical standards would impact

Drive wheel dia and gear size is major impact of design and manufacturing and testing.

2,gears technical information

Bevel gear

The cylindrical gear tooth profile corresponds to an involute, whereas the bevel gear tooth profile is an octoid. All traditional bevel gear generators manufacture bevel gears with an octoidal tooth profile. IMPORTANT: For 5-axis milled bevel gear sets it is important to choose the same calculation layout like the conventional manufacturing method. Simplified calculated bevel gears on the basis of an equivalent cylindrical gear in normal section with an involute tooth form show a deviant tooth form with reduced tooth strength by 10-28% without offset and 45% with offset . Furthermore, those "involute bevel gear sets" causes more noise.

2.Spur gear

Spur gear teeth are manufactured by either involute profile or cycloidal profile. Most of the gears are manufactured by involute profile with 20° pressure angle. When two gears are in mesh at one instant there is a chance to mate involute portion with non-involute portion of mating gear. This phenomenon is known as "interference" and occurs when the number of teeth on the smaller of the two meshing gears is less than a required minimum. To avoid interference we can have undercutting, but this is not a suitable solution as undercutting leads to weakening of tooth at its base. In this situation Corrected gears are used. In corrected gears Cutter rack is shifted upwards or downwards.
